Molex Incorporated Unveils Molex MicroCross™ DVI Link™ at Spring IDF
New technology enables high-quality DVO/DVI video at a low-cost
INTEL DEVELOPER FORUM, San Jose, Calif. - February 26, 2001 — Molex Incorporated (NASDAQ: MOLX and MOLXA), a global electronic components company, and Silicon Image (NASDAQ: SIMG), a price/performance leader in high-bandwidth semiconductor solutions for mass markets, today unveiled the Molex MicroCross DVI Link riser card for desktop digital video. Molex and Silicon Image collaborated on the product to bring a Digital Visual Interface (DVI) solution to desktop applications based on Intelâ motherboard designs utilizing the Digital Video Output (DVO) interface.
"The DVI Link riser card enables our customers to continue their move into, and more fully take advantage of, the DVI for the PC marketplace," said Dave Root, president of the DataComm Division at Molex. "The DVI link riser card technology provides PC and motherboard manufacturers a simple, low-cost solution with plug-n-play, high-resolution digital display technology."
With a low profile form factor and PC bracket, the DVI Link riser card includes a ribbon cable for simple connection to a PC motherboard. The product incorporates Molex's MicroCross DVI connector system, offering interfaces with all DVI digital display products and supporting video bandwidth demands.
The DVI Link riser card uses Silicon Image's PanelLink® Sil™ 164™ transmitter, the universal DVI transmitter for all PC and add-in-board applications. The SiI 164 was the first chip on the market to run 5 gigabits/sec. in a single-link video interface, the bandwidth required by the Digital Display Working Group (DDWG) for DVI compliance.
"DVI enables the highest quality visual experience on a display," said Michael Kelley, vice president of marketing and business development for Silicon Image. "As one of the DDWG promoters and the founder of the technology underlying the DVI specification, one of our key priorities is to bring the advantages of digital to consumers, who will reap the benefits of crystal-clear images and increased functionality as DVI-enabled PCs and displays proliferate. By enabling more PCs that are compatible with the wide array of advanced digital LCD monitors on the market today, this collaboration with Molex is a significant step toward this result."
The SiI 164 transmitter is a low-cost, all-digital video interface featuring scalable bandwidth to support displays ranging from VGA to UXGA resolutions (25-165 Mega- pixels/second). The SiI 164 transmitter features a flexible graphics controller interface that is compatible with Intel's DVO 12-bit graphic interface, as well as flexible input clocking and an I2C slave programming interface. Other features include an optional low-voltage interface, receiver detection, a de-skewing option and long distance cable support.
"Designers are looking for avenues to add more value to the PC," said Tom Matson, director of Desktop Boards and Systems Marketing at Intel Corporation. "This new DVI solution represents leading technology that will allow us to pave the way towards greater flexibility and capability in system designs."
The MicroCross Molex DVI Link will be available through authorized distributors as well as from Molex directly in high volumes and on a build to order basis. Pricing depends on quantity ordered. For example, when purchased in quantities of 2500, each unit costs about $34.00.
