SAGE INC. MEETS DIGITAL FUTURE OF FLAT PANEL MONITORS WITH DIGITAL INPUT FPD IMAGE SCALING ENGINE

Sage's Cheetah4 ASIC Delivers Low Cost, High Performance Display Engine for Digital Flat Panel Monitors
  • Adapts to All Digital Interface Standards Including Digital Visual Interface (DVI)
  • Offers Gamma Correction Feature to Optimize 8-bit Color for Specific Panel Manufacturers.
INTEL DEVELOPER FORUM, Palm Springs, Calif., Aug. 31, 1999-- -- Sage Inc., a leading supplier of electronics to the flat panel display (FPD) industry, today announced the Cheetah4, the company's first all-digital image scaling engine for flat panel monitors. As the industry moves toward an all-digital future, the digital display engine provides flat panel monitor manufacturers and OEMs with a low-cost all-digital ASIC enabling them to deliver cost-effective, high-quality XGA and SXGA resolution flat panel monitors.

"Sage realizes that the future of all displays will be all digital. With the Cheetah4, we have enabled manufacturers to address the growing demand for digital interface monitors by providing an all-digital alternative that enables them to deliver high-quality digital flat panel monitors at a reasonable cost," said Chandra Reddy, Sage president and CEO. "Sage is helping its customers address the ultimate trend towards digital interface monitors, enabling them to provide monitor solutions to address every segment of the flat panel monitor market."

"The new Sage Cheetah4 incorporates the Digital Visual Interface (DVI) specification developed by the Digital Display Working Group (DDWG)," said Steve Spina, Strategic Initiatives Manager at Intel Corporation and administrator of the DDWG. "DVI provides a widely adopted specification that will deliver faster, higher-quality solutions. Sage's announcement helps deliver the benefits of DVI to enhance the user's visual computing experience on the PC platform."

About Cheetah4 Display Control Solutions

The Cheetah4 display scaling engine offers manufacturers with several key features, such as gamma correction, edge enhancement, dithering and integrated on-screen display. Cheetah4 also includes an integrated two-wire serial interface that works with all major data transfer protocols - DDC1, DDC2B and DDC2Bi, - enabling the monitor to plug and play with virtually all digital graphics cards and display panels. Sage's digital FPD scaling engine also features two PWM outputs to enable the user to control the display panel's backlight brightness and audio volume if the monitor includes integrated speakers.

As with all Sage ASIC and board-level solutions, the Cheetah4 ASIC includes Sage's complete technical and engineering support from design through the manufacturing process. With Sage high level of design assistance enables manufacturers to dramatically reduce time-to-market, speeding the manufacturing process while ensuring premium quality.

Sage's Cheetah4 digital display engine is available for $15 per 1000-piece quantities in a 144-pin package.
