NEW PANELLINK® MONITOR CONTROLLER FROM SILICON IMAGE FEATURED IN
WORLD'S FIRST HDCP-ENABLED HDTV FROM JVC
SiI 905 Enables TV Manufacturers to Quickly and Easily Integrate DVI into
Advanced Digital Products
SUNNYVALE, Calif., August 7, 2001-- Silicon Image, Inc. (Nasdaq: SIMG), a
leader in high-bandwidth semiconductor and subsystem solutions for mass
markets, today debuted its new SiI 905 PanelLink® monitor controller
with High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP). The SiI 905 has
been incorporated in JVC's (Wayne, NJ) state-of-the-art 61" D'Ahlia
rear-projection HDTV monitor-the industry's first HDTV capable of receiving
digital content protected by HDCP. Eagerly anticipated since its debut at CES
2001, the D'Ahlia (AV-61S902) is now shipping to select retailers nationwide.
HDCP for the Digital Visual Interface (DVI) has been heralded as a key
enabler in the DTV revolution--allowing consumers to view premium Hollywood
movies in high-definition formats without leaving the comfort of their living
room while also satisfying Hollywood studios' concerns over the piracy of
their copyrighted digital content. Industry giants CableLabs®, DIRECTV,
Inc., EchoStar's DISH Network, the Fox Entertainment Group, Satellite
Broadcasting & Communications Association, Sony Pictures Entertainment, The
Walt Disney Company, Thomson Multimedia, Universal and Warner Bros. have all
announced their support for DVI with HDCP.
Developed by Intel with contributions from Silicon Image, HDCP provides an
additional layer of functionality to DVI, which was pioneered by Silicon
Image and introduced to the industry by the Digital Display Working Group.
DVI has become the de-facto standard for linking host devices and digital
displays in the PC realm and has generated significant interest in the
consumer electronics realm due to its ability to accommodate high-definition
video in its native uncompressed format.
Tony Sakae, general manager of the product planning and sales & marketing
department for JVC Industrial America, Inc., noted, "The D'Ahlia is a
perfect example of how JVC is at the forefront when it comes to innovative
TV technology. Featuring JVC's D-ILA high-resolution, digital display technology,
the D'Ahlia truly elevates the viewing experience. Since a HDTV is such an
important investment for our customers, it was crucial that the D'Ahlia be
future-proof and capable of displaying premium, HD content when it becomes
available. That's why we chose to incorporate DVI with HDCP. Silicon Image
has been leading the DVI HDCP initiative in the consumer electronics realm
and has a proven track record shipping reliable, high-performance DVI-compliant
solutions, so they were the logical choice when it came to this important
integration decision."
Parviz Khodi, Silicon Image's vice president of marketing, noted, "As our first
integrated controller win in the HDTV space, this is a breakthrough in Silicon
Image's consumer electronics initiative. Content providers have rallied around
DVI as the best means of getting HD content directly to consumers. We believe
DVI HDCP's merits will spur the industry to select DVI HDCP as the standard
connection between a digital host, such as a set-top box or DVD player, and
a digital display. This early design win from JVC, an innovator and worldwide
market-maker in consumer electronics, confirms the applicability of DVI HDCP
for TV applications and positions Silicon Image to take advantage of this new
market and revenue opportunity."
DVI HDCP renders the SiI 905 future-ready by enabling the implementation of new
display security applications and the viewing of premium video content. The
SiI 905 monitor controller provides a consistent, high-quality digital visual
experience with improved image focus, convergence and geometry. Featuring an
integrated, full-bandwidth PanelLink Digital receiver for proven DVI
compatibility, the SiI 905 offers a cost-effective, easy-to-implement
architecture for CRT-based displays such as HDTVs. The SiI 905 supports DVI
input from 25 MHz to 165 MHz and features a 25-175 MHz triple 10-bit video
DAC. The SiI 905's frame rate preservation locks incoming and outgoing frame
rates to eliminate temporal artifacts. In addition, the SiI 905 offers enhanced,
robust, input jitter tolerance and efficient power management.
JVC's D'Ahlia is a rear-projection TV with a 16:9 aspect ratio. It features
a high-density single panel with 1.32 million pixels, or 3.96 million RGB
dots, enabling the production of images with the highest resolution available
in a consumer device (1280 x 1028 pixels). The D'Ahlia features a high-contrast,
big screen image with corner-to-corner focus, a sleek, contemporary design, and
a brighter picture.
Currently shipping, the SiI 905 monitor controller is available in a 52-pin PLCC.
