Panstera's Single-Chip Solution Provides Dual Interface (both Analog and Digital) For Flat Panel Display Applications
Device Integrates Panstera's DVI-Compliant Receiver with a Triple A/D Converter; Supports 'Hot Plug', Auto Wake-Up, Power-Down Modes
San Jose, CA (October 4, 2000)- Panstera, Inc., a fabless semiconductor company based in Silicon Valley that provides advanced mixed-signal and complex digital logic solutions, has introduced a highly integrated device that combines the industry-proven PT60161 DVI-compliant receiver with its PT69884 triple Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) - all on a single chip. Production quantities are scheduled before the end of this year.
Designated as PT69888, Panstera's new advanced CMOS device includes a 170MHz DVI-compliant receiver that is designed for high-speed serial interface and the 140 Mega-Sample-Per-Second Triple ADC that is optimized for digitizing graphic RGB signals. The PT69888 is very well suited for LDC monitors and projectors, and plasma display panels.
Limas Lin, Director of Marketing for Panstera, said, "Traditionally, the cost of high speed ADCs for use in LCD monitors has added to their higher prices, hampering LCD monitors from joining the PC mainstream. But now, advanced high-speed ADCs have reduced the analog interface cost to less than $25 per monitor." And, Lin continued, "Deploying our CMOS technology, the whole analog interface can now be put on a single chip, such as Panstera's predecessor device, the PT69884. But our newer PT69888 takes integration one step further by also integrating our DVI-compliant receiver function."
Panstera Offers Dual Interface for Flat Panels
Fully compatible with all DVI transmitters, the PT69888's DVI interface features high inter-pair skew tolerance up to 1 full input clock cycles, while supporting "Hot Plug", auto wake-up, and power-down modes.
The PT69888's triple ADC function has a maximum of 500MHz analog bandwidth that supports digital displays up to 1280x1024 at 75Hz refresh rate (for SXGA). Also, the analog interface can be connected directly to the analog graphic RGB inputs signal without requiring pre-amplifiers. Furthermore, the PT69888 is designed with built-in three Clamp Circuits - one internal +1.25V reference voltage generator and one PLL for generating pixel clock from HSYNC input.
Having the PLL on chip increases performance. PLL clock jitter is less than 500 ps p-p typical, relative to input reference, and the COAST signal is presented the PLL maintains its output frequency in absence of the HYSNC. The PLL can also be disabled using the external clock inputs as the pixel clock.
The PT69888 also supports the industry-wide 2-wire serial bus interface, and all internal registers are fully programmable. The device also features special independent analog and digital test modes.
Housed in a space-efficient 128-lead PQFP surface-mount plastic package, the PT69888 operates over the 0 to 75 degrees C temperature range. The device operates from a single 3.3Volt power supply. Panstera's PT69888 can be purchased through the company's worldwide network of sales representatives and authorized distributors.
The DVI universal standard has been spearheaded by an industry consortium called DDWG (Digital Display Working Group) that has set the standard for the digital interface between PCs, consumer electronic devices, and digital displays. The DDWG consortium is supported by the cooperative efforts of Intel (NASDAQ: INTC); Compaq (NYSE: CPQ); Fujitsu and NEC of Japan; Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HWP); IBM (NYSE: IBM); and Silicon Image (Nasdaq: SIMG).
