Silicon Image Ships 15 Millionth PanelLink® Chip
Sunnyvale, Calif., October 30, 2000 - Silicon Image, Inc. (Nasdaq: SIMG), a price/performance leader in high-bandwidth semiconductor solutions for mass markets, today announced the shipment of its 15 millionth PanelLink® chip-the market-leading implementation of the industry's Digital Visual Interface (DVI) standard used to connect digital host and display devices. This milestone shipment, delivered to Samsung, was achieved less than six months after Silicon Image shipped its 10 millionth PanelLink chip earlier this year.
Silicon Image President and CEO Dr. David Lee noted that the rapid rate at which this milestone was achieved reflects the accelerated penetration of PanelLink in the marketplace. "We first began shipping PanelLink chips in 1997 and achieved our 10 millionth shipment milestone in less than three years. Shipments during the most recent six-month period represent one-third of all of the PanelLink units shipped-indicating that DVI adoption, and specifically PanelLink penetration, is gaining momentum."
Jalil Shaikh, Silicon Image executive vice president of operations and information technology, stated, "This milestone is particularly significant given our consistent track record of shipping high-quality chips on time and with defect rates among the lowest in the industry. The strong relationships we maintain with our manufacturing, testing and packaging partners have been key to our ability to consistently meet customer demand." Shaikh added, "Our DVI implementations have been acknowledged for their robustness and offer proven performance in noisy PC environments. While our competitors are focused on low-bandwidth first or second-generation solutions, we're working on our fifth-generation products that integrate additional functionality onto chips operating at speeds up to 5.0 Gbps for UXGA resolutions."
Having been incorporated in products by all of the top 10 PC OEMs and top 10 display manufacturers, PanelLink is the industry's first and most widely adopted implementation of the DVI specification, which is based on Silicon Image's technology. The Digital Display Working Group (DDWG), consisting of Intel, Compaq, Fujitsu, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, NEC and Silicon Image, introduced the DVI specification in April 1999.
PanelLink is the only end-to-end solution addressing both the host and display sides of the DVI link. Key to PanelLink's price/performance advantage is its proprietary reduced overhead Multi-layer Serial Link (MSL™) architecture, which includes a physical layer, coding layer and protocol layer on a single chip. Each of these layers is optimized for the particular application being addressed.
